Transport is among the major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants in the UK. According to government figures, it currently accounts for a third of all CO2 emissions, with the vast majority coming from road transport.
And while emissions have fallen back slightly, driven by improvements in car efficiency, there is still a very long way to go to achieve the Government’s Road to Zero Strategy. This specifies that at least half of all cars should be ultra-low-emission by 2030, with sales of petrol/diesel cars ending from 2040.
The Telegraph’s Smart Mobility conference, held recently in London, brought together experts to share ideas about how to achieve these ambitious targets.
Host Karla Jakeman, connected transport innovation lead at Innovate UK, emphasised the “importance of collaboration” between different companies while Trevor Dorling, managing director, DG Cities, said the focus must be on promoting electric vehicles rather than competing technologies such as hydrogen. “The last thing we need to do is confuse the public,” he said.
