Drivers could soon face losing their driving licence if they fail to pass a simple roadside eye-test. Brits are refusing to wear their glasses while driving – and they’re risking a hefty fine and three points if caught
A trial conducted by Thames Valley, Hampshire, and West Midlands police forces will see drivers asked to read a number plate from 20-metres away.
Drivers that fail the standard test could see their licence revoked.
The month-long campaign is to focus on UK driver’s vision and ensuring everyone on the road is safe and legal.
An estimated 1.5m UK licence holders have never had an eye test and crashes involving a driver with defective eyesight are thought to cause 2,900 casualties every year on the UK’s roads.
Vision testing in the UK is, however, deemed to be inadequate and not fit for purpose.
The test is also deemed to be antiquated as motorists are only required to pass a simple, 20-metre eyesight test when taking their test and then nothing again for the rest of their driving life
